596 blue, 389 yellow and 257 purple Power Slugs → 2 650 Power Shards. Where they are, how to convert them and what the MAM research needs.

Power Slugs are glowing creatures that sit on rocks, cliffs, in caves and on Gas Pillars. Picking one up gives an item that a Constructor turns into :icon[Desc_CrystalShard_C] [Power Shards](/wiki/items/power-shard) – the resource that unlocks [overclocking](/guides/overclocking) above 100 %. They do not respawn; tamed [Lizard Doggos](/wiki/creatures/lizard-doggo) occasionally find one.

## Counts and yield

| Slug | Item | On the map (Patch 1.0) | Power Shards each | Constructor recipe |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| :icon[Desc_Crystal_C|28] Blue Power Slug | [Blue Power Slug](/wiki/items/blue-power-slug) | **596** | 1 | 8 s → 7.5 Shards/min |
| :icon[Desc_Crystal_mk2_C|28] Yellow Power Slug | [Yellow Power Slug](/wiki/items/yellow-power-slug) | **389** | 2 | 12 s → 10 Shards/min |
| :icon[Desc_Crystal_mk3_C|28] Purple Power Slug | [Purple Power Slug](/wiki/items/purple-power-slug) | **257** | 5 | 24 s → 12.5 Shards/min |
| Total | | 1 242 slugs | **2 650 Shards** (5 300 with a Somersloop in the Constructor) | |

- 3 slugs are unreachable: 1 blue underground in the Rocky Desert (cm coordinates −169150, 86, 400) and 2 yellow inside Gas Pillars in Lake Forest (65494, −2077, 13600) and Desert Canyons (−11592, −149477, 12200).
- 1 slug of every colour is consumed by the MAM research; the wiki estimates about 10 Power Shards go into MAM research costs in total (unverified).
- Slugs cannot be sunk in the AWESOME Sink (0 points, they block the input).

## Finding them

- Scanner mode **Slug Scanning** in the MAM tree *Power Slugs* adds them to the Object Scanner (radius 250 m). A Radar Tower lists how many slugs, sloops, spheres and hard drives are within its 1 km radius.
- Highest density: Spire Coast. Yellow and purple slugs sit mostly on cliffs, in caves and on top of Gas Pillars – bring a Jetpack or Hoverpack. Many are guarded by Hogs, Hatchers or Spore Flowers, or sit under a [Cracked Boulder](/wiki/world/hazards#cracked-boulders).
- Every slug of this planner's world data is drawn on the [map](/map) – switch on the *Power Slug Mk1/Mk2/Mk3* layers under *Collectibles*.

## MAM research (Power Slugs tree)

| Research | Cost | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Blue Power Slug | 1 Blue Power Slug | Power Shard (1) recipe |
| Yellow Power Slug | 1 Yellow Power Slug | Power Shard (2) recipe |
| Purple Power Slug | 1 Purple Power Slug | Power Shard (5) recipe |
| Slug Scanning | – | Object Scanner target |
| Overclock Production | 1 Power Shard, 50 Iron Plate, 50 Wire | Overclocking of buildings |
| Synthetic Power Shards | – | Quantum Encoder recipe (see below) |

## Unlimited shards

Once the slugs are used up, the :icon[Desc_QuantumEncoder_C] [Quantum Encoder](/wiki/buildings/quantum-encoder) makes **Synthetic Power Shards**: 2 [Time Crystal](/wiki/items/time-crystal) + 2 [Dark Matter Crystal](/wiki/items/dark-matter-crystal) + 12 [Quartz Crystal](/wiki/items/quartz-crystal) + 12 m³ [Excited Photonic Matter](/wiki/items/excited-photonic-matter) → 1 Shard per 12 s (5/min), 0–2 000 MW. The AWESOME Shop also sells a Synthetic Power Shard for 10 Coupons.

Other uses of shards: Ionized Fuel (1 Shard per 24 s = 2.5/min per Refinery) and the Alien Power Matrix research (100 Shards).
